Pasture-raised Lamb
Lamb from Our Pasture-raised Katahdin Flock

At Waterloo Ranch we’ve chosen sheep as livestock because they require so few inputs and they give us a unique, flavorful meat. Our sheep are raised on grass through intensive rotational grazing systems that build our soil. We only supplement their diets with salt, mineral, and occasionally alfalfa.

We chose Katahdin sheep specifically based on their reputations as a durable breed and superior, more approachable lamb meat flavor. As a hair sheep breed that sheds their wool in the spring, Katahdins do not require shearing, and they have reputations for excellent mothering abilities and high resistance to parasites. The Katahdin breed truly affords us a livestock species that we can raise in the most natural setting possible.

In our quest to meet the highest standards of animal husbandry we remain members of Katahdin Hair Sheep International (KHSI) and the National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP). All sires and lambing ewes at Waterloo Ranch are registered through KHSI and Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s) are tracked and recorded so all breeding stock can be selected for favorable genetic predictability. This ensures that all sheep from Waterloo Ranch can either be a great source of food for you and your friends and family, or a great addition to your flock.
